Alaa Murabit

Chair of the Board, Girls Not Brides

Dr. Murabit is a physician and visionary catalyst who bridges divides between faith, policy, and health to dismantle systemic inequities and mobilize billions in resources for communities traditionally excluded from decision-making tables. Her pioneering approach transforms entrenched systems by centering community leadership and redefining global health as inseparable from peace, security, and gender equality. At age 21, she founded Voice of Libyan Women, catalyzing a global movement challenging religious misinterpretations to reimagine gender equity and security. Her work has shaped UNSC Resolutions, advanced the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, and architected the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). She is a UN Secretary-General-appointed SDG Advocate and has served on boards including Women for Women International and the Malala Fund.

Beyond her global policy impact, Dr. Murabit has mobilized over $40B for health, peacebuilding, and development initiatives. She serves as a UN High-Level Commissioner and leads Sustainable Growth at 500 Global. She previously led Phase Minus 1 for conflict and crisis strategy and response, co-founded The NewNow, established the Emerging Leaders Lab, and was previously Global Policy, Advocacy and Communications Director at the Gates Foundation, managing a $350 million annual portfolio.  She incepted the Beginnings Fund, a maternal health financing platform, and created For Mama, the first global faith-based collaborative fund for maternal health. She previously led Phase Minus 1 for conflict response, is a founding member of The NewNow, and created the Emerging Leaders Lab. Her impact earned her recognition as a TIME100 honoree and Harvard Radcliffe Fellow.
